from the State of Florida Commissioner
of Education Jeanine Blomberg. This award has been given in recognition
of the leadership and support rendered
to the school volunteer program.

The Academy of Architecture and Design provides students with opportunities to explore the many worlds of design. The Academy taps the expertise of practicing design professionals who enjoy working with young people. Guided by professionals, students move through a continuum from the basic elements of design to advanced levels of computer assisted design. A unique Construction Resource Academy allows students to see their designs move from the conceptual to the real.

Emphasis is on providing students with the knowledge and skills necessary for success in design fields. Core academic courses are specifically structured to support the themes of the Academy while important design electives offer students both theory and practice in the applied arts. Dual enrollment options allow students to earn college credit while technology-oriented design classes are a pathway to scholarship opportunities.

Bobby Connor and Katie McAlpin, Advanced Placement students of Leslie Rowntree Black, were honored at a special reception held at the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art on the evening of February 22nd. The reception recognized all AP studio art students in Broward County high schools whose artwork was accepted in the annual juried Superintendent’s AP Studio Art Exhibition. The exhibition was created to celebrate the highest standards in art education and the students will have the honor of their pieces being on display in the museum from Feb 22 to March 7th.

In addition to these two students and representatives from their families, Mr. Williams and Ms. Rowntree Black were in attendance. Superintendent Notter spoke to the group about his commitment to arts education and gave a plaque to each student in the show. Bobby was awarded third place and received a $1,000 Arts for the Future scholarship and a $300 scholarship for museum art classes. Congratulations to both of these NEHS artists!
